Ending the closest thing Sousuke had ever had to a real, functioning relationship with an argument and a job transfer to another country had not been his smartest move. On the other hand, work is work and in his case there's no end to it. Living in America isn't so bad, after all, and if he ends up healthier in the meantime... well. Fresh food is a little cheaper in America, and it's not like he'll see Makoto again any time soon anyway.

It's no mistake to say there's no end to his work, either. He spends more than a year running all over the country, turning over a lot of leads that lead to dead ends and a few leads that lead to tiny scraps. Everyone is excited when they get news of an actual, solid lead turning up in Japan. Sousuke is the obvious choice when it comes to selecting an agent to go handle their division's share of the tasks. He doesn't think anything of old flames entering the picture when he boards the plane back to Japan - so he's equal parts alarmed and annoyed when opens up the case file and sees Tachibana, M. partway down the list of agents he'll be working with.

Sousuke doesn't think anyone can fault him for splurging on a drink and dozing off for the rest of the flight.

He lands in Tokyo at around 5AM and is at the station immediately thereafter. Meeting face-to-face with Makoto again doesn't go nearly as awkwardly as Sousuke had anticipated, but even he can acknowledge that's only because there's no time to be awkward. There's a quick introduction, a quick mention that they've worked together before, and then there's nothing but evidence, theories, conferring with specialists from other departments, and running all over Tokyo to pin down more leads and more suspects. There's a brief break for lunch somewhere in there, an even shorter one for dinner a few hours later, and it's nearly ten at night by the time Sosuke is finally ready to call it a day and head back to his hotel.

His hotel... that he doesn't actually have yet because he left in such a hurry. Finding one so late at night in the middle of Golden Week doesn't strike him as a fun or even remotely feasible prospect, and that's how he finds himself in Makoto's apartment, laying awake on Makoto's couch, only a couple hours later. He's had a long day and he should be completely wiped out, but all he can think is that Makoto is right there, right in the other room, and it's well past midnight when he finally dozes off.

He's annoyed, but not really surprised, when he wakes up well before Makoto does despite the lack of alarm. Heaving himself over and scowling at the wall until he falls back asleep for another hour is an appealing prospect. Instead he drags himself off the couch and into the kitchen. Maybe he shouldn't be helping himself to Makoto's fridge like this, but he figures he won't get any complaints as long as he's cooking for both of them. Rice, omelets, miso, and coffee all end up being made. When Makoto finally emerges, he's greeted with a brief nod and a casual, "Mornin'."

As if it's perfectly normal for Sousuke to invade Makoto's kitchen and serve them both breakfast.
